Fans: How Does They Work?

This question should be answered by an electric fan manufacturer before purchasing such a device. There are different types of fans that work differently. There are both axial fans and centrifugal fans. We explain the function of both types.

If large amounts of air are to be circulated, the functionality of an axial fan is recommended. It works with the structure of a propeller, as installed in airplanes. The air is drawn in axially, via the engine axis. The subsequent blowing out is also carried out axially with this type of fan.

The advantages of the function include that the axial fan does not require much space to be set up because it is very compact. The airflow is straight. However, the increase in pressure is only slight.

The centrifugal fan is more reminiscent of a drum. The air is sucked in via a motor axle, which is also used to blow it out. However, this is shifted by 90 degrees. The advantages of the centrifugal fan include higher efficiency compared to the axial fan and quiet operation. However, more space is required.

As a rule, the fan types described are used for window or wall fans. It’s a fairly simple setup, so these devices are available at relatively affordable prices.

Since higher pressures can be achieved here, they are preferably installed in ventilation systems that work with a downstream or upstream filter. Alternatively, they can also be combined with an air heater.

In addition to the fan types already described, there are other types whose function differs. This refers to cross-flow fans or tangential fans.

The air is sucked in, and this happens across the entire width of the impeller. Then it is blown out again on the opposite side. This form is often used in tower or column fans. This functionality is also found in ventilation and air conditioning systems or in window ventilators, which are small devices.
